Good for you. And the planet.
Making the choice to take better care of your health is a major step in a good direction. For many people, this means deciding to eat better – perhaps cutting down on animal proteins and increasing their intake of fresh vegetables, eliminating processed foods, reducing sugar and salt intake, going gluten free, becoming vegetarian or vegan, taking dietary supplements… the list goes on. But for those who look beyond their own physical health to the health of the planet, it is important that their choices are not only effective but sustainable.
Making sustainable seafood choices to obtain your omega-3 essential fatty acids is about making decisions that support healthier oceans. Choosing a sustainably sourced omega-3 oil supplement is an easy and effective action that you can take every time you purchase supplements. Whether you are the main shopper for a large family or just buying supplements for your own needs, what you do matters; choosing eco-friendly solutions sends a message to supplement manufacturers and industry leaders that you support the responsible care of the Earth’s marine resources.
What does sustainably sourced mean – and who decides?
When it comes to seafood, “sustainably sourced” is a term given to seafood that is fished or farmed in a manner that can maintain production in the long term, or even increase production, without endangering the food chain in that particular body of water. Many conditions must be met to achieve the sustainable label, but some of the basic criteria for fisheries and aquaculture include:
- Having enough seafood stock to maintain long-term productivity
- Capturing the seafood using techniques that minimize the catch of unwanted species
- Capturing in ways that preserve the diversity of the surrounding ecosystem
- Capturing or farming in accordance with all local, national and international laws
- Taking a precautionary approach to ensure the health of the ecosystem
- Does not pose a substantial risk of harming wild aquatic animals through the escape of farmed fish, or by introducing diseases or parasites to wild populations
- Employing methods to safely treat and reduce the discharge of waste and contaminants
- Favouring conservation of the environment over taking environmental risks in daily operations and expansion
Pure Polar Shrimp Oil is made from raw materials and ingredients that are sourced from Sustainable Certified waters.
Pure Polar Shrimp Oil is made from the shells of cooked and peeled Northern coldwater shrimp that are sourced from Sustainable Certified waters in the North Atlantic Ocean.
The shrimp are caught at sea by fishing boats in the North Atlantic and brought back to on-shore shrimp processors in Eastern Canada where they are cooked and peeled. The cooked meat is sold to international markets for food, and the peeled shrimp shells are used by Pure Polar Labs for extracting the shrimp oil.
By using the shrimp shells, Pure Polar takes a by-product of the shrimp and converts it into a valuable health product.
In addition, Pure Polar is formulated using the proprietary MEG-3® omega-3 fish oil ingredient. MEG-3® fish oil is the most trusted source of EPA and DHA omega-3 from fish oil – without the fishy taste or smell.
